DESCRIBE THE IMPACT THE LATINAS WELDING GUILD HAS HAD ON THE INDY REGION.
Latinas Welding Guild works to provide support and affordable training for women and other marginalized groups looking to start a career in welding. There are over 100,000 welding jobs in Indiana right now, and these jobs are continuing to increase as more welders in the industry are retiring. The welding industry is primarily dominated by men, so women can face many challenges as they try to break into the industry. It can be even more challenging for Latina women.
Since fall 2019, 100% of Latinas Welding Guild members have reported facing one form of harassment while out pursuing their careers.
Latinas Welding Guild combats this by partnering with local community organizations to supply the women with resources and trainings centered around self-advocacy and civil rights. Most importantly, they have provided a safe space for the women to learn and earn their welding certificates.
The guild is also a place for multigenerational and multicultural impact. Latino communities are able to see the women in their families take on leadership positions, receive certifications, start their own businesses, and succeed in roles that are more often performed by men. Also, if English is not their first language, the guild offers bilingual programming and assistance with English welding terminology.
WHAT IMPACT WOULD $14,000 HAVE ON YOUR ORGANIZATION AND THE COMMUNITIES YOU SERVE.
Welding equipment and materials can be very costly, but the Latinas Welding Guild hopes to eliminate some of those costs for individuals looking to grow their careers. This grant will help provide students with helmets, boots, gloves, and other necessary equipment or protective gear. Students will also be able to receive scholarships if they are unable to afford the discounted certification fees.
The Latinas Welding Guild also hopes to continue expanding their impact through their summer youth group. This grant will allow help provide job opportunities for students interested in building vocational skills instead of following traditional paths to university education. Latinas Welding Guild hopes to use its services to continue transforming workforce development and inspiring a new generation of leaders throughout Indy.
