DESCRIBE THE IMPACT accessABILITY HAS HAD ON THE INDY REGION.
accessABILITY works to empower people with disabilities to find independence and lead self-sufficient lifestyles. It is an organization that is mainly build around peer support and advocacy. Each consumer that requests services has the opportunity to be matched with an advocate that understands their needs.
Over 71% of the staff also has some form of disability.
accessABILITY also provides independent living skills training which can be customized to the needs of any individual. For example, they can get help with basic cooking skills if they’re newly blind, basic financial skills, or orientation and mobility training. accessABILITY also offers basic home modifications and other assistive technology that can make independent living much easier. Devices like Amazon Alexa, magnifiers to read labels, ramps, and grab bars in the shower can all be provided to individuals in need.
Only 36.9% of people with disabilities in America are currently employed.
Laws may also limit their working hours and prevent them from being able to afford the technologies they may need. accessABILITY works to protect their rights by providing any necessary services free of charge. accessABILITY also provides disability justice trainings around the state and advocates for legislation that will make Indiana a more inclusive state for all.
WHAT IMPACT WOULD $14,000 HAVE ON YOUR ORGANIZATION AND THE COMMUNITIES YOU SERVE.
Individuals don’t need to provide any insurance or documentation status when they request services. This eliminates many barriers they may not have been able to overcome otherwise. This donation is important to accessABILITY because it will help the organization continue to provide the necessary home modifications and technology that consumers need, as well as expand disability justice trainings out into other areas of the Indy community. As we continue to have conversations about diversity, equity, and inclusion, accessABILITY hopes to ensure that accessibility is never excluded from the conversation.
