As a typical 21-year-old, I am always looking for new things to do and places to explore. I’ve never had a chance to experience a drag show before, but that’s changed now that I’ve moved to Indy! Indianapolis has an amazing drag community with a variety of fun drag shows and burlesque performances across the city. If you want to learn more, check out this list of Indy’s best drag venues! As for me, I recently headed over to the cutest restaurant called Baby’s for their monthly Drag Brunch. And let me tell you, it exceeded all expectations!
First, I’ve got to tell you about Baby’s! Located at the intersection of Talbott Street and 22nd Street, Baby’s has a rich history. Their building used to be the Talbott Street Nightclub, a place known for supporting Indianapolis’ LGBTQIA+ community. Baby’s has gladly embraced this legacy since their opening in 2019. And because it’s Pride Month, they set the stage for an extremely special drag show—perfect for my first time! The place was even decorated with rainbow streamers to celebrate the occasion!
Once I arrived, I peaked in the window and saw pops of pink and yellow covering the restaurant, with vintage-inspired decor sprinkled throughout. (A true dream for a fan of bright colors and retro styles like me!) Usually, Baby’s hosts Drag Brunch inside their glam, old-school diner, but this year’s brunch was outside on their covered patio to accommodate the CDC’s guidelines.
They hosted four shows on that hot summer Sunday, and I was fortunate enough to attend the 12:30 PM slot. Audience members arrived at least twenty minutes before showtime, already decked out in sparkles, animal prints, and rainbows. They camouflaged right into the drag show scene—a scene that could be described as sweet, with a kick! After all, Baby’s is known for their family-friendly environment, mixed with the thrill of a night out on the town. As Hannah Montana would say, “It’s the best of both worlds!”
As I entered the cheerful scene, the atmosphere was truly exhilarating! I quickly found my lime green seat for the afternoon, and I was happy to discover that I’d been placed right next to the DJ. Almost instantly, the waiter approached to ask if I would like anything to drink—other than the water, of course. There were so many tasty choices, and my indecisiveness made it extremely difficult to choose! I eventually settled on a mimosa – and given the orange juice had been freshly squeezed, it did not disappoint!
When everyone had been seated, they brought out the first course—loaded tater tots. These were served as an appetizer, with each table sharing the platter. Although my tots were covered in cheese, bacon, sour cream, and chives, Baby’s also offered a vegan version of this delectable dish. With upbeat music filling my eardrums and the tots satisfying my taste buds, I knew I was in for an exciting morning!
About ten minutes after the tots, our waiter brought us individual plates of savory chicken and waffles. Baby’s regular menu is known for their delicious broasted chicken, and their famous recipe complimented the waffles perfectly! About two bites into the main entree, the DJ finally spoke into the mic and announced that the show was about to begin. While I was enjoying my meal, my hunger faded in favor of my excitement, and I giddily turned my attention to the back of the patio. Showtime!
Our emcee for the morning sauntered in, sporting a shimmering aqua jumpsuit to kick off the performance. And from there on out, it was nonstop! One performer after another, they flaunted every bright and lively hue imaginable, while dancing to music from the greatest female icons. I’m talking about Cher, Whitney Houston, Lady Gaga, and so many more! With each new performer, I grew more and more amazed. I shimmied my shoulders, clapped my hands, and watched everyone else join in! It was awesome.
Oh, and a quick beginner tip: Don’t forget to bring PLENTY of one dollar bills to tip the performers! They definitely deserve it. Besides, one of my favorite parts was frantically taking the bills from my pocket and shaking them to catch the attention of these talented ladies!
Between singing along to “I Wanna Dance With Somebody” and dancing to Beyonce, my hunger returned. Luckily, the final course was placed on the table, and donut holes were just what my stomach was craving! They were perfect bite-sizes of sweetness, with a coat of pink sugar around them. My mouth is watering just thinking about them!
About the same time the donuts were served, I realized my mimosa was gone, and my indecisiveness struck again! But can you blame me? Their menu had everything from boozy milkshakes to cocktails called the “Bend and Snap!” Luckily, the choice was made for me when our table ordered a Halleloo pitcher! That refreshing concoction was perfect for the 80-degree weather. Reflecting back on the day, I have zero complaints about my cocktail choices, and I can’t wait to come back to try those other mixies I had in mind!
By the end of the show, I was shocked by how fast the afternoon had passed. The food satisfied my cravings. The cocktails quenched my thirst. The decor pleased my eyes, and—of course—the performers lifted my spirits! All in all, it was a fantastic first drag show experience! I would HIGHLY recommend attending one of Baby’s Drag Brunches—or even just going to Baby’s for their flavorful food and fun atmosphere.
I couldn’t have asked for a better event to attend for my first “Lexie’s Life in Indy,” and you can experience it too on July 11th! Just make sure to check out @babys_indy on Instagram to grab your own tickets to next month’s show. Trust me, it is definitely worth the hype!
